6 Steps to Goal Kicking

The 6 steps to help you improve your goal kicking, from your initial set up routine through to making a connection and following through to goal.

EQUIPMENT YOU NEED:

  • Sherrin Precision football
  • Training cones
  • Rope (for a straight line) or straight white markings on a court/pitch/oval

FOCUS POINTS:

Follow the steps below to kick more goals successfully.

  • STEP 1: HANDS ON THE BALL - Spread your fingers out to give yourself great coverage on the ball and try to control the ball further down to your foot.
  • STEP 2: BALL CARRY ALIGNMENT - Once you have got the handling right, the next stage is to get the ball carry right. Stand with the line of the Precision ball directly in the middle of your leg and use the line (rope) on the ground as a reference to keep the ball straight. Don't walk and wobble your arms, use the ground as your reference point.
  • STEPS 3 & 4: WALK IN & BUILD MOMENTUM - Now we need to walk in and build momentum straight through to the goal line. We're going to do this quicker and quicker making sure the ball is not moving. At the point we're about to kick the ball we need to look down and watch the ball. You have to watch the point of the ball when going to kick and make a connection with the bottom point of the ball so that it spins in a straight line.
  • STEPS 5: CONNECTION - We're going to watch the ball, and make contact with the sweetspot at the bottom of the ball so it spins violently. Now put this all into motion and speed it up, so we run in, watch the point of the ball and then follow through with the kick towards goal.
  • STEPS 6: FOLLOW THROUGH - After you have kicked the ball you have to make sure you follow through towards goal - plant your foot and skip forward.
